Web Site Conversion and Promotion Activity Reports

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

I’m excited to announce that Phase 1 of our report functionality is now available. With any reporting option there is a huge amount of data and complexity that can be displayed. Our goal was to keep the reporting function as simple as possible. One of the most frustrating things with web analytics applications is that they gather so much information that you have no idea where to begin when you look at the data. With this in mind, we created a very simple first pass at a reporting page that will deliver the kind of statistics you need to make quick business decisions.

Conversion Data

The first level of data shows the number of conversions you are receiving on your web site. To track conversions, simply add the standard Marketing for Mavens JavaScript code to the page you want to track conversions on, add that page URL into the page tracking section of the Marketing for Mavens application, and make sure the conversion box is checked. Now your page conversions will show on the report page.

The second level of data is click-through data for each promotion in your account. You can see, per week, which promotions are receiving the highest level of activity allowing you to quickly assess what promotions should be removed or redesigned to improve the response rates.

conversion and promotion activity graph

All of this information has been combined into one chart at the top of the report page so you can quickly spot the peaks and see how each page or promotion is tracking over time. Additional report functionality will be added over the next couple of weeks.

Right now, the next phase is scheduled to include RSS tracking. This will allow you to track blog posts, event data, or any other RSS related activity to see if the spikes in conversions and promotion activity match with the spikes in the events and content publishing activities that you’re doing on a weekly basis. The reporting page will remain fluid for now. Nothing is written in stone so please provide your feedback. It’s the only way to ensure that we can deliver the best report functionality that you need.

SEO: What Are You Doing With the Traffic That Comes to Your Site?

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

It’s a tough economy for most companies. Layoffs and budget cuts are happening everywhere and companies are being forced to do more with less. Web Marketing has picked up as the web is a cheaper way to reach customers by providing a higher return on your investment. SEO, in particular, has become an even hotter topic as the focus turns towards “free” and “low cost” ways to promote a company and drive traffic. However, driving traffic is only part of the equation. It’s what you do with this traffic once people get to your site that really matters.

At Marketing for Mavens, we’ve worked hard over the past year to deliver a product that helps you do more with less while also providing a better user experience for the people visiting your web site. If your traffic was to remain the same for the next year, our service will help you make the most of that traffic, helping you drive more leads than ever before.

Marketing for Mavens matches your promotions and offers to each individual visitor based on the pages they view on your web site. This allows you to target your content more effectively while providing a better user experience. This is an automated process. You provide the content and Marketing for Mavens will match it to your visitors. It’s simple to setup and you can be testing the effectiveness of our service in a matter of minutes.

We are currently offering a free beta program that is running through the next few months. Once the beta ends (targeting March 09), the service will continue to be available for free with some limitations. Let us help you make the most of your marketing budget and see how matching your promotions to your visitors can more effectively help you turn visitors and happy customers.

Easily Improve Your Web Site's Conversion Rates Today

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

The easiest and best way to improve the conversion rates on your web site is to ensure that your callouts, promotions, ads (or whatever else you like to call them…) are in alignment with the needs of the people viewing them. This isn’t rocket science but it isn’t something that is easily done on most web sites.

For starters, you need to have a way to manage your promotions. This can be done through most content management systems. Then you need to track each individual visitor on your site so you can learn about their specific needs. Very few web analytics packages go into this level of detail. Finally, you need a way to process each person’s visitor history in real-time and display the promotion that best matches that visitor’s need when a new web page loads. Again, there aren’t that many options. When you tie these 3 pieces together you have a powerful system for increasing the conversion rates on your web site.

What we’ve done with Marketing for Mavens is put these 3 pieces together in a single package where you can easily manage all of the promotions on your web site. Our tracking code builds a visitor history which allows us to automatically display your most relevant promotions to each visitor in real time. Now, several promotions can share the same real esate on your web pages and you can be confident knowing that each time a promotion is displayed, it is targeted to a specific visitor that wants that information. This will lead to an increase in your conversion rates providing your sales team with more leads. Right now, Marketing for Mavens can be tried for free by signing up for the current beta program.

Increase Sales Leads without Increasing Traffic

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Every person who visits your web site is a potential sales lead. Too many companies focus on the hard part which is increasing traffic each month to increase the number of leads they receive. Instead, focus on what you already have. If you have 1000 people visiting your site each day, your site should be focused on turning each one of these visitors in to a lead.

It’s simple math. If you have 1000 visitors per day and your conversion rate is 2%, your site is acquiring 20 leads per day. Now let’s say you focus your efforts on improving your marketing to your 1000 visitors per day by customizing your web site to each visitor’s specific needs. Not only does this improve the overall satisfaction of each of your visitors but it leads to a 4% conversion rate on your site. Now you receive 40 leads per day. Isn’t the much more likely to happen and easier to do then trying to double your daily traffic to receive the same number of leads? In the first instance, you have the control. In the other, you’re relying on outside help (search engines, advertising, etc.).

Next time you try to find new ways to increase your traffic, remember, the number of visitors doesn’t matter as much as how well you treat them when they come in. Focus on what matters most, the visitors who are already interested in what you have to offer.

The New Web Marketing Tribe: Helping Web Marketers Kick Ass

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Marketing for Mavens has been working on a spin-of site called WebMarketingTribe.com. One thing we’ve noticed over the years is a lack of a single resource for anything and everything related to corporate web marketing. We’ve decided to take some time to develop a site to cater to this community.

Like any community site, the breadth and depth of the content is up to you. Marketing for Mavens will be actively participating but the site won’t reach its full potential until other Web Marketers take part as well.

Our goal is to create a single resource that Web Marketers can go to not only learn about the latest news but also use as a reference to find the top historical information. In addition to news information, we’re also working on a resource section for tracking and rating all the tools related to our focus. We’re also looking at how we can better integrate RSS feeds, Twitter, and upcoming event information.

Please take some time to check out the site and let us know what you think.

Effective One-to-One Web Marketing

Monday, October 13th, 2008

When I talk about Marketing for Mavens, I’m often asked what the overall purpose is of the company. The easiest way to describe the it is “effective one-to-one web marketing”.

I describe it this way because over the years, web marketing is no longer effective. It has become a catch all bucket in many companies. Web Marketers are expected know how to code, design, advertise, optimize for search, analyze web reports, and gather sales leads. With all of this, we started to get away from the core purpose of web marketing which is to effectively communicate with our visitors.

Marketing for Mavens is working to change this. We realize you don’t have the time and resources to do effective one-to-one marketing on your web site. You probably have hundreds of people visiting your site every day. How do you stop and learn what each person wants and direct them to the content and promotions you offer that fulfills this want?

You do this by using Marketing for Mavens. We track what each individual is doing on your site. You simply give us the content you want to promote and we’ll make sure its displayed to the people who want to see it.

This is all done through the Marketing for Mavens web application. You select the areas on your web site where you want your targeted content, promotions, and offers to appear. Then add this content to Marketing for Mavens. Once added, we’ll automatically promote your content to your visitors based on their visitor history. The more pages they visit, the more accurately we can match your content to the needs of your visitors.

This is all done in real-time which makes your life much easier. Previously it would have been impossible for you to even think you could customize your web pages to each visitor. Now it’s as simple as entering your content into Marketing for Mavens and letting visitors actions determine what content they receive. You don’t need to worry about being all things to all people, hoping that one of promotions will eventually catch the attention of one of your visitors. Now you can make better use of the promotional spots on your site and be confident that your web site is communicating more effectively with each of your visitors.

A/B and Version Testing Your Web Promotions and Offers

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

With the recent addition of link tracking, you can now perform A/B Testing (Split Testing or Version Testing as some like to call it). The easiest way to do this is by creating a new tag promotion. You can choose to not tag any of your promotions and Marketing for Mavens will randomly distribute your promotions to your visitors. This will ensure that there are no biases and that the results are based as closely on the content of your promotions as possible. You can also choose to use tags and still do A/B Testing but, to do so, the promotions you’re comparing need to use the same tags to ensure an equal distribution to a similar audience.

Once the promotions have run for several days, you can begin to compare the results across your promotions. For now, you can see how many times a promotion was displayed and see how many times a link in that promotion was clicked. In addition to these statistics, we’re currently adding more statistics and conversion tracking code to further refine the effectiveness of promotions.

Track the Success of Your Promotions and Offers

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

We’ve added a new link tracking option to the promotion form that allows Marketing for Mavens to track the success of your links. This will allow you to see how successful your promotions and offers are and compare them over time. Right now, the backend system is in place to track each link and display the results as “clicks” on the promotion page. Soon, you will be able to see which visitors clicked on your promotions and track whether the promotion led to a conversion (sale, lead, registration, etc.).

As always, Marketing for Mavens is in beta. If you find any bugs with this new feature, please email us at bugs@marketingformavens.com.

Web Analytics is Dead

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Web Analytics is the one thing that all web marketers do and it continues to be the least understood. Every corporate site uses some form of Web Analytics software. Whether it’s Google Analytics, WebTrends, WebSideStory, or some other package, companies spend thousands of dollars a year on these applications. The problem is that these packages record too much information with too little time to respond. When we do respond, it’s to make small changes designed to appeal to the masses that have already been to your site and that if we’ve even interpretted the data correctly.

If we’ve learned anything in the ClueTrain era it’s that mass anything no longer works. Just look at mass advertising, mass email, and mass mailings. These marketing techniques require that you hit as many people as you can because you’re only going to reach about 3% to 5% of them. Well what about the other 95%. Shouldn’t we at least try to appeal to them? Well we can.

To appeal to the other 95% on the web, we need to be able to customize and target our content directly to them. We need to learn about our visitors as they use our sites and we need to respond to their needs in real-time, not weeks and months later when we have time to analyze our reports. We don’t have the time. Many people will only visit our sites once to decide if they want to do business with us. These lost opportunities will never come back.

We’re now well into the Web 2.0 era but our web analytics software has done little to catch up. It’s now time to look for ways to communicate as close to a 1 on 1 basis as possible. I’ve been formulating these ideas for some time now and have begun integrating them in the Marketing for Mavens web application. It focuses on communicating with each of your visitors and I welcome you to try the free beta and let us know what you think.
