Web Traffic Watch

Friday, August 14th, 2009

We continue to make progress on our new tool for watching visitor traffic on your site. We’re currently working on the user interface and working out some of the bugs.

Next week we’ll be adding a form for people to join the Web Traffic Watch beta. This will be very limited in the beginning due to the load it puts on the servers. If you want to join this beta you will need to be part of the Marketing for Mavens beta. You can sign up for the Marketing for Mavens beta today and be ready to get in on the Web Traffic Watch beta when it starts in a few weeks.

Tracking Web Site Visitors: Visits vs. Visitors

Friday, August 14th, 2009

There are several basic web site statistics you should know. The first one we’re going to review is visitor statistics.

Visitor stats tell you how many people have come to your web site. As the popularity of your site grows and your site shows up in more search results, more people will come to your site. This gives you a good guage as to how well your site is performing over time.

It is important to know that there are two different visitor statistics, visits and visitors. They mean very different things. Visitors is the number of unique people who come to your web site over a certain period of time. Visits is the number of times people visited your web site. For example, if 5 people come to your site over the course of the day, this is considered 5 visitors. Now lets say 2 of those people visited your site twice that day. This would still be 5 visitors but the number of visits would be 7.

Marketing for Mavens tracks both of these stats for you. The dashboard view shows you the number of visits you’ve received over the past year and past week. It also show you the number of visits you are on pace for the current day. This gives you quick glimpse into how well your site is performing over time and if you’re on track to continue this performance.

Project Lite-App: View Visitor Data in Real-Time

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

We’re going to be working on a side project that takes the data collected by Marketing for Mavens and displays it in real-time in what we’re calling a lite-app. The application will be accessed from your browser but it will use a small width interface – about 200px – to display visitor data. We’re working on the best approach for developing this application now. It will rely on AJAX for data retrieval and display. There are a few tricky areas which we’re trying to solve – specifically, reordering visitors as data is retrieved and keeping the view fresh without over-burdening our test servers. We’ll keep you posted on our progress.

How Marketing for Mavens Simplifies Web Marketing

Monday, April 20th, 2009

I wanted to take a couple of minutes to highlight the core sections of the Marketing for Mavens web app.

Dashboard: Highlights the daily health of your web site. Quickly see what programs and promotions are performing well and what ones need your attention. The dashboard view keeps you informed of what is going on with your web site

Campaigns: Track your web marketing campaigns. Determine which campaigns are most effective by seeing how many visitors came to your site from each campaign and what and where they went afterwords. See how many downloads, videos, and audio files were clicked as a result of your campaigns.

Web Tracking: Add the web pages and resources that you want to track on your web site. Web page tracking allows you to tag pages and determine the “value” of a page by assigning a points to it. When a person visits this page, they are assigned these tags and the point value is added to their total points. A person’s total points helps you determine how “hot” a lead is and the tags determine their interests. Resource tracking is similar to page tracking but it is also used to build the related content widget. This widget is used to suggest resources that a person may be interested in based on your site usage history.

Promotions: Promotions can be any html code that is distributed to an individual visitor based on their interaction with your web site. Typically, promotions are marketing calls-to-action which are displayed to individuals based on some knowledge of what that person is looking for, but they can also be small sections of content, banner graphics, and other unique content. Instead of always displaying the same promotions to every visitor in the same location on your site, you can display only the promotions that are relevant to each visitor based on their tag history.

Citizens: A complete history of all of the visitors who have come to your web site. See exactly what pages each visitor clicked on, what resources they were interested in, their tag history, and lead status.

Reports: A 6 month history broken out to show conversions ber week, promotion activity per week, and RSS usage.

Effective One-to-One Web Marketing

Monday, October 13th, 2008

When I talk about Marketing for Mavens, I’m often asked what the overall purpose is of the company. The easiest way to describe the it is “effective one-to-one web marketing”.

I describe it this way because over the years, web marketing is no longer effective. It has become a catch all bucket in many companies. Web Marketers are expected know how to code, design, advertise, optimize for search, analyze web reports, and gather sales leads. With all of this, we started to get away from the core purpose of web marketing which is to effectively communicate with our visitors.

Marketing for Mavens is working to change this. We realize you don’t have the time and resources to do effective one-to-one marketing on your web site. You probably have hundreds of people visiting your site every day. How do you stop and learn what each person wants and direct them to the content and promotions you offer that fulfills this want?

You do this by using Marketing for Mavens. We track what each individual is doing on your site. You simply give us the content you want to promote and we’ll make sure its displayed to the people who want to see it.

This is all done through the Marketing for Mavens web application. You select the areas on your web site where you want your targeted content, promotions, and offers to appear. Then add this content to Marketing for Mavens. Once added, we’ll automatically promote your content to your visitors based on their visitor history. The more pages they visit, the more accurately we can match your content to the needs of your visitors.

This is all done in real-time which makes your life much easier. Previously it would have been impossible for you to even think you could customize your web pages to each visitor. Now it’s as simple as entering your content into Marketing for Mavens and letting visitors actions determine what content they receive. You don’t need to worry about being all things to all people, hoping that one of promotions will eventually catch the attention of one of your visitors. Now you can make better use of the promotional spots on your site and be confident that your web site is communicating more effectively with each of your visitors.

Promoting Campaigns Based on Site Visits

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Currently, Marketing for Mavens offers 3 types of promotions; tags, visits, and individual. I’d like to take a moment to explain the visit promotions.

Visit promotions are designed to show different content based on the number of visits a person makes to your web site. For instance, the first time someone visits your site you may want a home page promotion that explains what your company does. Then for all subsequent visits, you can change the promotion to go into more detail about your products, events, and services.

Visit promotions aren’t distributed to your visitors based on their needs the way tag promotions are but they can be very valuable in certain circumstances. Just remember, a new visit is determined by the time in-between page views which is 30 minutes. When you test your visit promotions, you will need to wait 30 minutes between page checks for a new visit to be recorded.

Treat Your Web Visitors with Respect. Stop Herding Cattle.

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

One of the features of Marketing for Mavens is the ability to see how each visitor comes to your site and where they go. The real value is that it forces you to see your visitors as individuals instead of a crowd of people.

When you look at your typical web report, you see how all of your visitors interact with your site. You know that a majority of people visit your home page and that a certain percentage go to your product pages but you miss out on the details like how did this person get here, what were they looking for, and did they find it. The other problem is that any changes you make to your site based on these reports is designed to appeal to the masses. Web reports force us to treat our visitors as cattle that we can herd around. We try to find the path of least resistance that we can push them towards and then track the results through funnel analysis knowing that a certain number will drop out but if we can convert 10% to leads we’ll be very happy.

This leads us to the niche that Marketing for Mavens fills. There’s a very good reason to use all those web reports and you should continue to do so but you should also be looking at your individual visitors as well. Marketing for Mavens will assist you in treating each visitor, or as we like to call them citizen, with respect and open up a new way of communication that will transform how you interact with your potential customers. With this approach, you will understand what your citizens needs are and assist them in fulfilling these needs turning your citizens into customers more quickly and more efficiently then pushing them through a path that you already know loses 90% of your potential leads.
