View Your Web Marketing Campaigns in a Whole New Light

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Web marketing tends to be made up of several different systems all creating different campaigns that don’t talk to one another. Email marketing creates campaigns in their tools, the web team creates ad and search campaigns in another system, bloggers post to yet another system, and on and on. When it comes time to measure a campaign, you find yourself tyring to pull different data from all of these systems into a single report so you can assess the effectiveness of the campaign. This is a huge problem.

Lately, we’ve been thinking of ways that Marketing for Mavens can help solve this problem. The latest feature release which went out on Tuesday now includes campaign management. This is just the first phase but it already gives you the ability to create a campaign in Marketing for Mavens and develop a URL tracking code which you can use to track the effectiveness of your online campaigns. This is the start of what will become an in-depth measurement tool which will allow you to see:

  • how many people responded to a campaign
  • where each individual visitor went on your site
  • what PDF’s, videos, and audio files people were interested in
  • what forms were completed

This give you significantly more knowledge and a better understanding of the effectiveness of your campaigns. You know what works and what didn’t work and you can make changes accordingly.

This is Just the Beginning

Phase 2 is currently underway and will give you the ability to match your web content and promotions to the campaigns people respond to. So if you send out an email campaign, you can extend the campaign to your web site by using Marketing for Mavens to provide content that’s inline with the email message. Your web site now becomes a continuation of the story.

Detailed reporting is also coming in phase 2. Each campaign will be updated in real-time with the latest information all on one screen. Currently, individual campaign pages show you who was interested in your campaigns and you can drill down into each profile to gather more data. In phase 2, the information will be available on the campaign page so you can see all the information at quick glance.

We are very excited about the potential that campaign management brings to Marketing for Mavens. There is a world of potential here and we’re just scratching the surface. In the end, we want to make it as simple as possible for you to manage all of your web marketing campaigns in one location. To get started, join the beta, and email us with your feedback.

Update: Marketing Campaign Tracking and UI Changes Coming Soon

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

I wanted to post a quick update on where we’re at since it’s been a little while. The past couple of weeks have been filled with updating the promotion tracking interface and adding the ability to track marketing campaigns.

Marketing campaign tracking will be a significant addition to Marketing for Mavens. It will allow you to track your visitors across all of your campaigns. For example, if someone visits your site from an email campaign, you will see when they came in, where they went, and what they were interested in. Even more importantly, we are working on a system to expand your campaigns to your web site. So if you have a message you’re using in the email campaign, you can seamlessly advance the story using your web site and your Marketing for Maven’s promotion spots.

We are very excited about the potential of adding campaign tracking. It will not only help you see the value of your campaigns but also help you build better connections with your visitors by delivering a customized content experience. We hope to have the first phase of campaign tracking available within the next couple of weeks. This will be the last major enhancement to Marketing for Mavens before we come out of beta in the March/April time frame.

Deliver More Leads without Spending More on Adwords and SEO

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

When it comes to generating more sales leads, web marketers will usually look for ways to bring in more traffic. Many will go straight to Google Adwords and bump up their daily spend. Others will start new SEO campaigns. What is often overlooked is the steady flow of visitors already coming to your web site.

These are the people you should focus your attention on especially if you’re working with a small budget or one that has remained flat or decreased over the past year. Each person who comes to your site opens up the opportunity to meet a new client or customer. To do so, your content, messages, and promotions should be built to match the needs of your visitors. This ensures that they feel welcome and shows that you know and really “get” what their problems and/or needs are.

In theory this sounds great but in practice it can be very overwhelming trying to learn what hundreds or thousands of visitors each month want from you. This brings us back to why web marketers generally focus more on the masses and work on pulling in “traffic”. I think it’s time that we move beyond the masses. Mass-everything is dying in this new world of one-to-one communication and micro-niches. This is why we’ve been working so hard on Marketing for Mavens. We want to find a better way to hypertarget individual visitors that is both beneficial to you and them.

We’ve found that the best way to do this is by managing all of your promotions, niche content, persona content, and offers together in one location and then, using an algorithm, analyze your visitors based on the pages they visit, and in real-time deliver the best content that matches their needs. This simplifies the process for you and makes it easier for your visitors to find the content they want.

While visitors are browsing your site, we are gathering information on the pages they go to, where they came in from, and the content they are viewing and building profiles of each person to better understand their needs. Now, when someone completes a form on your site, you can provide additional information to your sales team other than the one PDF that was viewed or product that was downloaded. You can show a complete history of all the PDF’s, videos, downloads, etc. which will help your sales team provide a higher level of service to your potential customers and clients. From a Marketing perspective, you’ll learn which content and promotions are most active, which pages are converting the most leads, and more importantly connecting and communicating directly with your customers.

SEO: What Are You Doing With the Traffic That Comes to Your Site?

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

It’s a tough economy for most companies. Layoffs and budget cuts are happening everywhere and companies are being forced to do more with less. Web Marketing has picked up as the web is a cheaper way to reach customers by providing a higher return on your investment. SEO, in particular, has become an even hotter topic as the focus turns towards “free” and “low cost” ways to promote a company and drive traffic. However, driving traffic is only part of the equation. It’s what you do with this traffic once people get to your site that really matters.

At Marketing for Mavens, we’ve worked hard over the past year to deliver a product that helps you do more with less while also providing a better user experience for the people visiting your web site. If your traffic was to remain the same for the next year, our service will help you make the most of that traffic, helping you drive more leads than ever before.

Marketing for Mavens matches your promotions and offers to each individual visitor based on the pages they view on your web site. This allows you to target your content more effectively while providing a better user experience. This is an automated process. You provide the content and Marketing for Mavens will match it to your visitors. It’s simple to setup and you can be testing the effectiveness of our service in a matter of minutes.

We are currently offering a free beta program that is running through the next few months. Once the beta ends (targeting March 09), the service will continue to be available for free with some limitations. Let us help you make the most of your marketing budget and see how matching your promotions to your visitors can more effectively help you turn visitors and happy customers.

Increase Sales Leads without Increasing Traffic

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Every person who visits your web site is a potential sales lead. Too many companies focus on the hard part which is increasing traffic each month to increase the number of leads they receive. Instead, focus on what you already have. If you have 1000 people visiting your site each day, your site should be focused on turning each one of these visitors in to a lead.

It’s simple math. If you have 1000 visitors per day and your conversion rate is 2%, your site is acquiring 20 leads per day. Now let’s say you focus your efforts on improving your marketing to your 1000 visitors per day by customizing your web site to each visitor’s specific needs. Not only does this improve the overall satisfaction of each of your visitors but it leads to a 4% conversion rate on your site. Now you receive 40 leads per day. Isn’t the much more likely to happen and easier to do then trying to double your daily traffic to receive the same number of leads? In the first instance, you have the control. In the other, you’re relying on outside help (search engines, advertising, etc.).

Next time you try to find new ways to increase your traffic, remember, the number of visitors doesn’t matter as much as how well you treat them when they come in. Focus on what matters most, the visitors who are already interested in what you have to offer.

The New Web Marketing Tribe: Helping Web Marketers Kick Ass

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Marketing for Mavens has been working on a spin-of site called WebMarketingTribe.com. One thing we’ve noticed over the years is a lack of a single resource for anything and everything related to corporate web marketing. We’ve decided to take some time to develop a site to cater to this community.

Like any community site, the breadth and depth of the content is up to you. Marketing for Mavens will be actively participating but the site won’t reach its full potential until other Web Marketers take part as well.

Our goal is to create a single resource that Web Marketers can go to not only learn about the latest news but also use as a reference to find the top historical information. In addition to news information, we’re also working on a resource section for tracking and rating all the tools related to our focus. We’re also looking at how we can better integrate RSS feeds, Twitter, and upcoming event information.

Please take some time to check out the site and let us know what you think.

Effective One-to-One Web Marketing

Monday, October 13th, 2008

When I talk about Marketing for Mavens, I’m often asked what the overall purpose is of the company. The easiest way to describe the it is “effective one-to-one web marketing”.

I describe it this way because over the years, web marketing is no longer effective. It has become a catch all bucket in many companies. Web Marketers are expected know how to code, design, advertise, optimize for search, analyze web reports, and gather sales leads. With all of this, we started to get away from the core purpose of web marketing which is to effectively communicate with our visitors.

Marketing for Mavens is working to change this. We realize you don’t have the time and resources to do effective one-to-one marketing on your web site. You probably have hundreds of people visiting your site every day. How do you stop and learn what each person wants and direct them to the content and promotions you offer that fulfills this want?

You do this by using Marketing for Mavens. We track what each individual is doing on your site. You simply give us the content you want to promote and we’ll make sure its displayed to the people who want to see it.

This is all done through the Marketing for Mavens web application. You select the areas on your web site where you want your targeted content, promotions, and offers to appear. Then add this content to Marketing for Mavens. Once added, we’ll automatically promote your content to your visitors based on their visitor history. The more pages they visit, the more accurately we can match your content to the needs of your visitors.

This is all done in real-time which makes your life much easier. Previously it would have been impossible for you to even think you could customize your web pages to each visitor. Now it’s as simple as entering your content into Marketing for Mavens and letting visitors actions determine what content they receive. You don’t need to worry about being all things to all people, hoping that one of promotions will eventually catch the attention of one of your visitors. Now you can make better use of the promotional spots on your site and be confident that your web site is communicating more effectively with each of your visitors.

A/B and Version Testing Your Web Promotions and Offers

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

With the recent addition of link tracking, you can now perform A/B Testing (Split Testing or Version Testing as some like to call it). The easiest way to do this is by creating a new tag promotion. You can choose to not tag any of your promotions and Marketing for Mavens will randomly distribute your promotions to your visitors. This will ensure that there are no biases and that the results are based as closely on the content of your promotions as possible. You can also choose to use tags and still do A/B Testing but, to do so, the promotions you’re comparing need to use the same tags to ensure an equal distribution to a similar audience.

Once the promotions have run for several days, you can begin to compare the results across your promotions. For now, you can see how many times a promotion was displayed and see how many times a link in that promotion was clicked. In addition to these statistics, we’re currently adding more statistics and conversion tracking code to further refine the effectiveness of promotions.

Track the Success of Your Promotions and Offers

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

We’ve added a new link tracking option to the promotion form that allows Marketing for Mavens to track the success of your links. This will allow you to see how successful your promotions and offers are and compare them over time. Right now, the backend system is in place to track each link and display the results as “clicks” on the promotion page. Soon, you will be able to see which visitors clicked on your promotions and track whether the promotion led to a conversion (sale, lead, registration, etc.).

As always, Marketing for Mavens is in beta. If you find any bugs with this new feature, please email us at bugs@marketingformavens.com.

Promoting Campaigns Based on Site Visits

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Currently, Marketing for Mavens offers 3 types of promotions; tags, visits, and individual. I’d like to take a moment to explain the visit promotions.

Visit promotions are designed to show different content based on the number of visits a person makes to your web site. For instance, the first time someone visits your site you may want a home page promotion that explains what your company does. Then for all subsequent visits, you can change the promotion to go into more detail about your products, events, and services.

Visit promotions aren’t distributed to your visitors based on their needs the way tag promotions are but they can be very valuable in certain circumstances. Just remember, a new visit is determined by the time in-between page views which is 30 minutes. When you test your visit promotions, you will need to wait 30 minutes between page checks for a new visit to be recorded.
